JOSEPH SMITH AND THE MORMONS by Noah Van Sciver

I’ve delightedly watched my good friend Noah grow from a twenty-something whippersnapper into maybe the greatest cartoonist of his generation. In Joseph Smith and the Mormons, all the work he’s done as a cartoonist over the prior decade and a half — all the drawing, all the writing, all the observational skill he’s developed — has culminated in this book, which I have no qualms calling a masterpiece. The story of the Mormon Church’s founder and prophet, Joseph Smith, Noah depicts the events of Smith’s life in a straightforward but highly researched manner, allowing the reader to draw their own conclusions. His rendering of 19th Century Mid-American life is, of course (given Noah’s longstanding fascination with the era), incredible and a joy as a reader to experience. I found the book completely immersive and emotionally charged, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. Includes comprehensive notes from the author. 464 hardcover pages, 9.5″ x 6.125″, weird cool puffy hardcover, amazing full color printing throughout. Wow. (Abrams ComicArts)
