OUT OUR WAY: Smokey’s Saga by J.R. Williams, ed. by Ron Evry and Bruce Simon

For some time, Bruce Simon has been producing these lovely collections of early Public Domain cartoons from the Golden Age of Newspapers. I’m proud and delighted to offer them here at Spit and a Half!

Many of Williams’ daily cartoons featured Old West themes — cowboys, ranch hands, horses, and the like — but this collection of his Out Our Way series  presents what in retrospect was one of the earliest serial adventure strips; gradually, over time, the standalone daily gags begin to tell a longer story. Originally published from 1924 – 1926, this is a fascinating look at comics history — and American history, from the hands of one of the great early cartoonists. 156 full-sized pages, color covers, black and white interiors.
